HONOLULU – Emily Hartong had 21 kills, Nikki Taylor added 11 more and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team kicked off its 2013 NCAA Tournament run with a 25-16, 19-25, 25-12, 25-13 victory over Idaho State on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The 'Bows (25-4) now advance to play BYU, who beat Arizona State in the early match, on Saturday night with a trip to Southern California and the Los Angeles Regional on the line. Jade Vorster poured in a match-high five blocks and Mita Uiato added 41 assists and a block of her own.
 
Tressa Lyman had a team-high 13 kills to lead the Bengals who close the season at 23-12. Sommer Reeder had eight kills and Hayley Farrer added 10 digs.
 
Set one saw the 'Bows run off six straight points highlighted by three Hartong service aces. The lead later swelled to 20-10 off a pair of Kalei Adolpho kills and an Ali Longo ace. The Bengals went on a four-point spurt to cut into the lead, but Hartong closed the door with a trio of kills to give UH the one-set lead.
 
Idaho State turned the tides on Hawai'i with an equally dominant set two win. The Bengals went on an 8-2 run midway through the set to take a 16-10 lead, a run sparked by a trio of Tressa Lyman kills, and never looked back in evening the match.
 
The 'Bows returned from the locker room as they had opened the match, dominating the Bengals for the next two sets to advance to their second round match with the Cougars. Taylor had a pair of kills to kick-start set three, giving the 'Bows a 10-3 lead. ISU got back in the set with three straight points, but the momentum was short-lived as Tai Manu-Olevao (9 kills, 3 blks) and Hartong both buried kills to put UH ahead 18-11.
 
Set four was more of the same, as the 'Bows made quick work of Idaho State to seal the win.
 
First serve tomorrow between Hawai'i and BYU is set for 7:00 p.m.
