VIDEO: Standhardinger's Game-Winning Shot
HONOLULU –
Christian Standhardinger's baseline jumper with one second remaining lifted the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team to a 76-74 win over Saint Mary's on the second day of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. One night after a last-second loss to Boise State, the Rainbow Warriors (8-3) reversed their fortunes against the Gaels to pick up their sixth win in the last seven games.
Standhardinger finished with a game-high 22 points, while also adding nine rebounds and four steals. The senior's efforts propelled UH into the fifth-place game of the tournament, where they will face Oregon State of the Pac-12 at 11:00 a.m. on Christmas morning. Saint Mary's (9-2), meanwhile, suffered their second straight loss after starting the season a perfect 9-0.
The game-winning jumper capped an exciting game which saw UH and Saint Mary's exchange blows for the full 40 minutes. The lead changed hands five times in the first half with UH taking a 43-39 lead at the break. UH never trailed in the second half, but the game was deadlocked six times in the second stanza, including twice in the final 90 seconds.
Isaac Fotu pitched in 13 points for UH,
Brandon Spearman added 12 and
Aaron Valdes had 10 huge points off the bench in the first half.
Keith Shamburger tallied six assists, including the set-up on Standhardinger's winner from the short baseline.
Both teams suffered disappointing losses on the first night of the tournament and came out firing. Saint Mary's shot 53 percent for the game and UH shot 50 percent. The 'Bows held a four-point lead at halftime thanks in part to their defense that forced 13 Gael turnovers. UH extended its lead to as many as eight points in the second half, but Saint Mary's clawed back with some long-range daggers and finished with 10 three-pointers for the game. UH countered by going 22-of-29 from the line, including a 14-of-17 performance by Standhardinger.
The last second win was UH's second in the last three years in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, which also included a overtime victory over nationally-ranked Xavier in 2011. UH will play in the tournament's fifth-place game for the fourth straight year.
