HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team continues its fall season as they host the Weinman Foundation Invitational from Thursday, Nov. 7 – Saturday, Nov. 9. The Rainbow Wahine will be hosting Arizona and UC Irvine in the three-day tournament at the UH Tennis Complex.
Hawai`i started the fall strong, against HPU and Chaminade in the UH `Anuenue Invitational in October. Overall in that tournament, the Rainbow Wahine notched a 19-3 record in singles and 10-3 mark in doubles. Hawai`i then headed to the ITA Southwest Regionals in San Diego, Calif. where they won 4-of-6 singles matches in the first round, but then struggled a little in the Round of 64 when all four fell in straight sets. Unfortunately in doubles, UH's three pairs all faced the top three ranked duos in the tournament—all from USC.
Earlier this season, the Arizona Wildcats captured their own Wildcat Invitational by capturing their three doubles and five singles matches to clinch the tourney title over Northern Arizona, Texas-Stan Antonio (UTSA), and UTEP. Most recently at the same ITA Regionals that UH competed in, UA doubles teams went 3-2 advancing to the semifinals, while posting a 9-5 singles record. Kim Stubbe was the lone Wildcat to advance all the way to the quarterfinals before being knocked off by Brynn Boren (USC).
Defending Big West champions, UC Irvine looks to build upon last season when the Anteaters advanced an won its first NCAA tournament match and had its season highlighted by a 20-match win streak. In the same ITA Regional, UCI's Kat Facey captured the consolation singles title while the duo of Sarah Gong and Marivick Mamit advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the No. 2 USC team.
