DAVIS, Calif. –
Emily Hartong bashed 29 kills and posted 21 digs but for the second-straight match the No. 8 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team lost in five sets, this time to UC Davis on Saturday night at The Pavilion. The 'Bows, who rallied from two sets down, fell to 16-4 overall and slipped into a tie for third place with Long Beach State in the Big West Conference at 5-3. Set scores were 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 15-25, 15-9.
Hawai'i dropped the first two sets but convincingly won sets three and four. The rally was halted when the Aggies opened set five with three straight points and held on for the win. The 'Bows scored the next four points but UC Davis (12-9, 4-4 BWC) used a 7-1 run mid way through the set to shut the door on a valiant Rainbow Wahine comeback.
Mary Schroeder led the Aggies with 17 kills and Megan Lancaster equaled Hartong with a match-high 21 digs.
Jade Vorster had another solid night on the defensive end with a match-best seven blocks.
Tai Manu-Olevao had 14 kills and 11 digs and
Nikki Taylor added eight kills and six blocks.
UH had a rough start to set one. Kaylin Squyers (8 kills) had a kill and a block assist to highlight an early 4-0 Aggie run, and Victoria Lee (9 kills) did the same later in the set to help push the lead to 18-8. UH featured Manu-Olevao early but it was Hartong who helped Hawai'i make a late run. She drilled four kills and a recorded a pair of blocks to cut the Aggie lead to just one point but it proved not to be enough.
The 'Bows dropped set two but, in championship-like fashion, responded with a dominant set three win. UH took a one-point lead midway through and raced to the win. A
Mita Uiato (3 kills, 12 digs) kill capped a 4-0 run and a Vorster kill gave the 'Bows a 22-16 lead.
The momentum continued for Hawai'i who scored seven of set four's first eight points en route to a dominating win. The 'Bows maintained their six-point advantage off kills by Taylor and Vorster as they extended the match to a fifth set. After UH rallied to take a 4-3 lead in set five, UC Davis's run put the match to bed.
UH returns home this week to host UC Irvine (Friday, Nov. 1) and Long Beach State (Saturday, Nov. 2).
