HONOLOLU – It was a spirited evening of volleyball at the Stan Sheriff Center, as University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine players, past and present, showcased their talents in a pair of alumnae contests on Friday.
The first match of the evening pitted two alumnae teams against each other. With just one set scheduled, the white team beat the green team 25-19. The featured match of the evening saw the current Rainbow Wahine team sweep the Alumnae, 25-19, 25-19, 28-26.
Ashley Kastl had an unofficial match-high seven kills for the 'Bows, coming alive in what turned out to be an exciting third set. Hedder Illustre had a stuff and a pair of blocks as the Alumnae came out firing and took an early 9-3 lead. Kastl and
Kristiana Tuaniga stemmed the tide for UH, each belting a pair of kills as the varsity rallied to take a 13-12 lead.
The Alumnae weren't done and went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. UH had one final run of their own as the two teams traded points down the stretch, but in the end it would be the 'Bows who would snag the win and complete the sweep.
Tai Manu-Olevao unofficially posted six kills with
Emily Hartong and
Nikki Taylor recording five kills each.
Brittany Hewitt had a solid evening for the Alumnae with five kills and three blocks, unofficially.
The 'Bows return to collegiate action this week when they hit the road for a pair of Big West Conference matches. They face Cal State Northridge on Thursday, Oct. 24 then take on UC Davis two days later.
