HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'I women's tennis team began day one of the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational against No. 3 Duke at the UH Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
 
In doubles play, UH's top pair Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Suworowa was defeated by the Blue Devils' top pairing of Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfeld, 8-4. The closest doubles match of the day was between UH newcomer Paulina Petriskova and Martina Kostalova who went into extra play against the Duke duo of Annie Mulholland and Marianne Jodoin, but ultimately fell 8-7(1) in the end.
 
In singles play, No. 53 Mary Clayton was put to the test against Poljakova. The match ended in a second set tiebreak where Clayton prevailed, 6-4, 7-6(5). On the second court, Kostalova was defeated by No. 40 Goldfeld, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 3 singles match, Annie Mulholland defeated Xenia Suworowa on the third court, 6-2, 6-4.
 
On Thursday, Jan. 10, UH will begin day two of the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational at 2:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
