Men's Tennis Continues Homestand Against San Diego State, Pacific

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team will look to improve its two-match win streak when it hosts No. 66 San Diego State and Pacific this weekend at the UH Tennis Complex.

UH coach John Nelson will be welcoming his former team to town on Thursday. He coached at SDSU for 10 seasons and guided the Aztecs to five NCAA Tournament appearances.

UH won its past two matches beginning with a 5-2 victory over UC Irvine on Jan. 18. The Warriors dominated the match in singles play to win going away. Hawai'i won the first four finishes, with Chas Okamoto's 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Ryan Cheung at the four to clinch the win. UCI won at second singles, but Jonathan Brooklyn finished the day with an exciting 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 at the one over Tyler Pham.

Hawai'i won its first doubles point of the season against Sacramento State on Jan. 20. Jared Spiker and Danilo Casanova teamed up at the two to top Sean Kolar and Tom Miller, 8-5. The Warriors earned the point when Okamoto and David Schuster won at the three, 8-4.

Nils Schuhmann holds 2-1 record in singles this season, all on the No. 6 court. His first win came at the hands of No. 15 Baylor's Robert Verzaal, 6-1, 6-4. Schuhmann also beat UCI's Caryl Hernandez in the first Big West Conference matchup this season.

UH plays San Diego State on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 2:00 p.m and Pacific on Friday, Feb. 15 at 2:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at the UH Tennis Complex.
