HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-1, 1-0 Big West) notched its first win of the season over Cal Poly, 5-2 in their Big West Conference opener.
The Rainbow Wahine captured the doubles point with No. 1
Katarina Poljakova and
Xenia Suworowa finishing first, defeating the Mustangs' Sophia Bott and Alexa Lee, 8-4 and UH's
Martina Kostalova and
Paulina Petriskova holding off Cal Poly's Gabrielle Gatewood and Louise Oxnevad on the No. 2 court to capture the first point of the game. In the last double's match, Hawai'i's
Kelsey Daguio and Rebecca Faltsz fell in a heartbreaker to Jennifer Cornea and Ane McPike, 9-8 with a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker.
The Rainbow Wahine fell in the first singles match completed in the No. 4 slot with CP's Bott knocking off Petriskova, 6-, 6-1. But the 'Bows then won four matches in a row, starting with No. 3 Suworowa holding off Lee in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Faltusz then came through with an intense first set win which ended 7-6 with an 11-9 tie-break score. Faltusz then cruised to the win in the second set, blanking Gatewood, 6-0. No. 2 Kostalova won in three sets over Cornea, 6-4, 3-6. 6-1 to capture the match. UH's Poljakova then came through with a three-set win on the No. 1 court against Oxnevad, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and the Mustangs' Kathryn Webb battled back to defeat
Kelsey Daguio in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to finish the day.
It marked the return to the Big West for the Rainbow Wahine after spending the last 16 seasons in the Western Athletic Conference. This is the 13th overall season for the 'Bows in the Big West.
The match with Cal Poly concludes UH's three-week homestand. The Rainbow Wahine will now travel across the country to participate in the ITA Kick Off Weekend event in Miami, Fla., Jan. 25-28.
