HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team lost a tough match against No. 15 Baylor, 6-1, on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Warriors drop to 0-2 while Baylor wins its season opener.
In doubles play, UH's Jared Spiker and David Schuster were topped by the Bears' Patrick Pradella and Marko Krickovic, 8-3. BU's top duo of Mate Zsiga and Diego Galeano were put to the test against Jonathan Brooklyn and Dymtro Kovalyov, but prevailed in a close 8-6 game.
In singles play, Danilo Casanova played the closest match of the day in a three-set thriller at No. 5 against BU's Diego Galeano. Casanova lost the first set 6-4, but stayed alive when he won the set two by the same score. In the final set, the match went to a tiebreak and Galeano prevailed, 7-6 (7-5). Nils Schuhmann kept UH from being swept when he defeated Robert Verzaal, 6-1, 6-4, on the No. 6 court.
UH will continue the season on Friday, Jan. 18, when it faces UC Irvine at 2:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
