Game Notes
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team (9-6, 3-1 BWC) looks for its first-ever Big West road win when it takes on defending league champion Long Beach State (7-8, 3-1 BWC) on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. PT (2:00 p.m. HT) at the Pyramid.
Both teams sit atop the league standings with Cal Poly at 3-1. Both were also entangled in tightly-contested matchups on Wednesday, though with differing results. UH suffered its first Big West loss of the year with a 68-64 setback at UC Irvine in a game that saw 21 lead changes, 15 of which came in the second half. LBSU, meanwhile, won its second straight league game with a 78-69 home win over Cal State Northridge. The 49ers needed a 22-4 second-half run as the teams exchanged the lead 15 times.
The Rainbow Warriors are led by the front court of
Christian Standhardinger (15.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg),
Vander Joaquim (14.4 ppg, 8.7 rpg) and
Isaac Fotu (10.8 ppg, 7.1 rpg). Standhardinger logged his sixth double-double of the year with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in UH's last outing at UC Irvine.
The game will prove to be UH's biggest league challenge to date as the Rainbow Warriors face a 49er squad that has won 19 straight Big West home games dating back to 2010. This will be the 12th all-time meeting between UH and LBSU. The 'Bows have won three straight meetings, including a pair of home and away wins in 2007.
