Emily Hartong had 12 kills,
Jade Vorster equaled a career-high eight blocks and the No. 8 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept Long Beach State 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The 'Bows remain unblemished in the Big West Conference at 5-0 with 12-2 overall record. The 49ers drop to 2-2 in conference and 7-8 overall.
Hawai'i and Long Beach State have a storied rivalry but tonight was not indicative of that. UH hit a solid .370 for the evening with Vorster posting just one error on 13 attacks.
Ali Longo had a team-high 10 digs and
Mita Uiato added five blocks and a match-high 36 assists.
Chisom Okpala led Long Beach with nine kills and Janisa Johnson had a match-high 12 digs.
Long Beach's only momentum came in the first set when the 49ers built an early 4-1 lead, but Hawai'i quickly responded and ran off seven of the next eight points for the easy first set win. The 'Bows pushed the lead to 19-12 on a pair of kills by Vorster and
Jane Croson (8 kills), and Kalei Adolpho (9 kills, 2 blocks) collected a pair of kills and a block to seal the win.
The final two sets saw Hawai'i gain control early and never allow Long Beach State in the match.
Ashley Kastl had five kills and two digs for the match, and Hartong added six digs and three blocks to her stat line.
The 'Bows take to the road next week to play a pair of Big West matches at Cal Poly (Oct. 5) and UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 6). Both matches will start at 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT).
