HONOLULU –
Emily Hartong and
Jane Croson both posted 14 kills and nine digs, and the No. 8 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team made quick work of UC Irvine in a three-set sweep (25-18, 25-11, 25-18) on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i improved to 11-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Big West Conference, while UC Irvine dropped to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in conference.
The 'Bows forced UCI into a .090 attack percentage and only 25 total kills.
Ali Longo recorded a match-high 12 digs and Kalei Adolpho hit .375 while also posting three blocks.
Sydney Wright had eight kills and a match-high five blocks for UC Irvine.
The early stages of the first set were the only time UCI posed a threat. The 'Bows trailed by a point when Hartong and Adolpho both buried kills, then two more by
Jade Vorster (7 kills) gave them a 14-11 lead. UH pushed the advantage to 18-12 and coasted to the win.
The next two sets saw the 'Bows grab early leads and never look back. Croson rocketed a pair of kills as UH opened the second set on a 7-1 spurt. The lead swelled to 18-6 on kills by Croson and Vorster as the 'Bows cruised to the win and the commanding two-set lead. Hawai'i led in set three, but had to fend off a late run by UCI before completing the sweep. UH led 20-13 but after Croson's attack was blocked, the Anteaters had cut the lead to 21-18. Another Croson kill stemmed the tied and block assists by
Stephanie Hagins and
Mita Uiato sealed the win.
Hawai'i next hosts Long Beach State on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
