HONOLULU – After 16 years in the Western Athletic Conference, the No. 7 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team begins its first Big West Conference season, opening with a trio of road matches against Cal State Northridge (Sept. 19, 7:00 p.m. PT), UC Riverside (Sept. 21, 7:00 p.m. PT) and Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 22, 7:00 p.m. PT).
The trip will be the longest of the conference season for the 'Bows, who hold a 7-2 record with their most recent loss against current No. 1 UCLA (Sept. 9). Emily Hartong leads the Big West averaging 4.30 k/s and Jade Vorster has a conference-best .375 attack percentage. Kalei Adolpho is right behind Vorster hitting .330. Hawai'i was a unanimous favorite to win the Big West.
Hawai'i enters the trip with a combined 50-0 record against the three teams. The 'Bows are 12-0 against Cal State Northridge, last playing the Matadors in 2005 and winning in three sets. Versus UC Riverside, UH is 11-0 with its last meeting against the Highlanders a three-set sweep in 1987 as members of the Big West.
The 'Bows have won all 27 of their matches against Cal State Fullerton. The two teams played last season in Fullerton just two days after Hawai'i won its final WAC Tournament title. After a lethargic start, UH went on to beat the Titans in four sets to close the regular season.
Hawai'i's opening match of the trip against CSUN is set for Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
