Cross Country Gets Preview Of Big West Meet At UCR Invite

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team placed 15th at the 32nd annual UC Riverside Invitational Saturday at the Agricultural Operations Course on the UCR campus.
 
The meet was a preview of the Big West Conference Championships, which will be held at the same Ag Ops course next month. Southern Utah took the team title with 31 points with three runners placing in the top five, including winner Jamie Smith (20:30.6), who edged teammate Sylvia Bedford (20:32.5).
 
UH placed 15th of 16 teams with 423 points in the 6K race that was the first for several members of the squad. Behind Southern Utah were host UCR and Nike Team Run LA (76), UC Santa Barbara (90), and Claremont (130).
 
Hawai'i freshman Kelsie Kobayashi ran her first-ever 6K race and placed 78th overall with a time of 23:12.0. Sophomore Tiare Nakashima and freshman Amity Gregg also competed in their first 6K races and placed 97th and 99th in 23:55.1 and 23:56.9, respectively.
 
Rounding out UH's top five were sophomore Louise Mulvey (24:20.2, 103rd) and senior Ashlee Jimenez (24:37.7, 110th). Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine were sophomore Heather Delgado (24:38.4, 112th), senior Megan Dart (24:44.7, 116th) and junior Amanda Lee (25:06.3, 121st).

Also on Saturday, UH's "B" team competed in the Brigham Young-Hawai'i Invitational and finished fifth. Sara Silverman led the Rainbow Wahine finishing in 20th place (22:27) followed by Bronte Kaneakua (22:46, 21st), Melody Papalii (23:16, 23rd), Erin Carvalho (23:24, 24th), and Alissa Noll (25:59, 28th).
 
UH's “B” team will next compete in the Chaminade Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 22 while its travel squad will compete in the Stanford Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 29.
