PULLMAN, Wash. – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team dropped its first match in nearly a month with a 2-0 loss to Washington State Friday afternoon at WSU's Lower Soccer Field. UH dropped to 5-2-2 with just it second loss of the season.
After controlling much of the match, the Cougars scored a pair of second-half goals to end UH's seven-match unbeaten streak. It was a school-record tying streak for the Rainbow Wahine who registered five wins and two ties during that span. Hawai'i's last loss came in its season opener at Nevada on Aug. 17.
Playing its third road match of the season, the Rainbow Wahine struggled against the Cougars, managing just four shots all match. UH was shutout for just the second time in nine matches this season and first time since the season-opening loss at Nevada.
Washington State, meanwhile, put constant pressure on the Rainbow Wahine, finishing with 15 shots, including eight on goal. Despite the pressure by WSU, the Rainbow Wahine were able to hold off the Courgars for the better part of 60 minutes due to the stellar play of
Kanani Taaca who registered four first-half saves, most of them in spectacular fashion.
The Cougars finally broke through on a header by Micaela Castain in the 62
nd minute off a cross from Beau Bremmer. It was Castain's team-leading seventh goal of the year. Jocelyn Jeffers added an insurance goal for WSU in the 80
th minute.
The Rainbow Wahine will remain on the road and next face Eastern Washington on Sunday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m. HT).
