VIDEO: Coach Powell on the Defensive Line

Starter Returning: Paipai Falemalu
Starters Lost: Zach Masch, Vaughn Meatoga, Kaniela Tuipulotu
Letterwinners Returning: Haku Correa, Siaki Cravens, Desmond Dean, Geordon Hanohano, Marcus Malepeai, Siasau Matagiese, Moses Samia, Tavita Woodard, Beau Yap
Squadman Returning: Ho'oikaika Cavaco-Amoy
Redshirts: Calen Friel
Newcomers: Michael Andrade, Dale Haretuku, Toli Ilaoa, Storm Makiona, Jordan Pu'u-Robinson, Hunter Thomson

Despite the loss of three starters, including a pair of all-conference standouts, the defensive line is still considered one of the deepest units on the squad.

Anchored by end Paipai Falemalu, a senior from Hau'ula, O'ahu, the line returns 10 lettermen from last season, all of whom saw action in a rotation that went three-deep at some positions.

Falemalu, who is considered the team's top defensive pro prospect, made 12 starts last season and is the top returning lineman in terms of tackles (50), tackles-for-loss (6.0), sacks (4.5) and quarterback hurries (7).

The other end will be occupied by Beau Yap, a sophomore from Honolulu, and junior Tavita Woodard, a junior from Honolulu. Yap's father Boyd starred for UH in the early 1980s while Woodard saw time at tight end during the spring. Marcus Malepeai, a sophomore from Honolulu, appeared in 11 games as a back-up last season and can play either tackle or end.

A pair of seniors – Geordon Hanohano (Honolulu) and Haku Correa (Honolulu) – each have three years of experience at tackle. Hanohano appeared in 12 games totaling 18 tackles last season while Correa started the first three games before suffering a season-ending leg injury.

At nose tackle is Moses Samia, a sophomore from 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu, and Siasau Matagiese, a junior from Waimea, Kaua'i. Both saw extensive time last season as back-ups.

Also expected to see time in the rotation are redshirt freshman Calen Friel (Kane'ohe, O'ahu) and Washington State transfer Jordan Pu'u-Robinson (Wailuku, Maui). Friel is a bulky tackle from Kailua High School while Pu'u-Robinson, a Baldwin High School alum, appeared in 10 games as a sophomore at WSU last season.

Freshman Michael Andrade (Kealakekua, Hawai'i) is a redshirt candidate. Other lineman on the roster include Toli Ilaoa (Kapolei, O'ahu), Storm Makiona (Wai'anae, O'ahu), Hunter Thomson (Waialua, O'ahu), and Dale Haretuku (Pago Pago, American Samoa).
