No. 53 Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Home Schedule

HONOLULU – The No. 53 University of Hawai'i (9-6) women's tennis team will play its final two home matches of the season this week against Western Athletic Conference opponents Utah State (8-6, 1-0 WAC) and San Jose State (11-3, 1-0 WAC). Both matches will be played at the UH Tennis Complex on Friday, April 6 and Sunday, April 8, respectively.

The Rainbow Wahine battled through a tough match against UCD last week on Friday, March 30. After sweeping doubles, UH's momentum shifted to Aggies' favor in singles play where UH lost their lead and were down 3-2 going into the last two matches. Hawai'i's Katarina Poljakova evened the match at 3-to-3 with a hard fought 7-5 (5), 6-4 win over Dahra Zamudio. Martina Kostalova then battled back to seal the win for the 'Bows in the longest match of the day, defeating Lauren Curry 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Hawai'i's top duo of Jamie Pawid and Barbara Pinterova improved to 5-3 after the win, while Kostalova and Aglae Van den Bergh also improved to a 7-5 overall record in doubles play. After Pawid's landslide victory against Kelly Chui (6-2, 6-0), Pawid saw her overall record progress to 10-6 on the season. After moving to the No. 2 position, Poljakova is 7-3 on the season.

The Aggies come to Honolulu with a three-match winning streak on the line. Mckenzie Davis (12-1) lost her first match of the season against Brittiny Moore of Weber State. Kristina Voytsekhovich has won her last three matches, raising her record to 7-3 at the No. 3 position.

The WAC-leading Spartans are on a school-record 10-match winning streak going into this week. San Jose State has swept their last three matches 7-0 over North Dakota, Idaho State and Eastern Washington. Sabastian Leon Chao is a mainstay at the No. 1 singles position with a 10-4 record. Chau Truong is on a 10-match winning streak herself going 6-2 and 5-1 at the No. 2 and No. 3 position, respectively. Erica Medlin and Leon Chao have shown great chemistry, going 10-1 as the top doubles team.

Sunday will be Senior Day for a pair of UH athletes, Barbara Pinterova and Aglae Van den Bergh.
