No. 61 Women's Tennis Advances to WAC Championship Match

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The 61st-ranked University of Hawai`i women's tennis team held off the Idaho Vandals, 4-3 to advance to the championship match of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference tournament hosted by New Mexico State. The Rainbow Wahine won the doubles point and then hung on for the win by splitting the singles matches, 3-3.  For the second straight match, freshman Martina Kostalova came through with a three set win to advance the 'Bows in the tourney on Friday at the NMSU Tennis Complex.
 
In doubles, Kostalova and Aglae Van den Bergh coasted to a win against Alejandra Lozano and Beatriz Flores, 8-2.  On the No. 2 court, Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Suworowa were in a heated battle against Molly Knox and Sophie Vickers at 6-7 when the top UH duo of Barbara Pinterova and Jamie Pawid finished off Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz, 8-5. UH went into singles competition with a 1-0 lead.
 
UH's No. 6 singles player Kelsey Daguio finished first with a loss to Beatriz Flores, 6-3, 6-2 and Suworowa gave UH a 2-1 lead by defeating Lozano in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0 on the No. 5 court. UI then evened the match again with Almudena Sanz defeating Poljakova, 6-4, 6-3, but UH's Pawid was see-saw UH back into the lead with a win over Molly Knox, 7-5, 6-3. But Pinterova's loss to Lozana knotted the match at 3-3. It all came down to who would win in the No. 4 court.  Kostalova lost the first set, but stormed back with a come from behind victory over Sophie Vickers, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to secure the match and the team win.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will advance to the championship game, where they face-off against the top seeded Fresno State Bulldogs who also narrowly defeated New Mexico State, 4-3. The first serve on Saturday will be at 10 a.m. MT.
