HONOLULU – Amidst blustery weather conditions and a temporary power outage at Les Murakami Stadium, the University of Hawai'i baseball team lost, 6-5, to Central Michigan in their series opener on Wednesday night. The Rainbows fall to 9-5 overall while the Chippewas improve to 5-7.
UH trailed the entire night but looked prime to take the lead on numerous occasions. Their final opportunity came in the eighth inning when the 'Bows had the bases loaded but could only manufacture one run. CMU pitcher Jon Weaver plunked
Trevor Podratz (1 H, 1 RBI) on the shoulder with the bases loaded as UH cut the lead to 6-5, but that would be it for the night as Central Michigan walked away with the one-run victory.
Matt Sisto (3-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season for UH. He allowed four runs on 10 hits in five innings of work. Jordan Foley (2-0) gave up two earned runs in 5.1 innings for the win.
Breland Almadova and Pi'ikea Kitamura led the Rainbows at the plate, both recording two hits, one run, and one RBI. Nick Regnier (3-4, 2 R) and Sam Russell (3-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) led the Chippewas at the plate.
CMU struck first with a run in the second inning. With Nate Theunissen (2 H, 1 R) on first, Jordan Adams (2 H, 1 R) drove a ball deep over
Kaeo Aliviado's (1 H, 1 RBI) head in left field but was thrown out trying to advance to second. Theunissen advanced to third on the play and was driven home on a Russell base hit.
The Chippewas would extend their lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but the Rainbows responded with two runs of their own. Aliviado's RBI-base hit helped UH cut the lead to just one run, which was as close as the 'Bows would get on the night.
There were 2,226 tickets issued for the contest, and a turnstile count of 726.
UH and Central Michigan retake the field Thursday for game two of their series. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
