Women's Hoops to Battle Louisiana Tech in WAC Tourney Opener

2012 WAC TOURNAMENT BRACKET

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The sixth-seeded University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (11-18, 6-7 WAC) will battle No. 3 Seed Louisiana Tech (15-14, 8-6 WAC) in the opening quarterfinal game at the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 7 at 12:00 pm (PT).
 
Hawai'i is trying to snap a two-game skid after dropping both their final two road games last week at Utah State and Idaho. The Rainbow Wahine however finished the conference slate at 6-8—its best record since the 2007-08 season. Hawai'i will open the tournament against the No. 3 seeded Lady Techsters, like UH, have dropped their last 3-of-4 games coming into the tourney. The 'Bows swept LaTech for the first time in school history with a 64-46 win in Honolulu and a 61-49 win in Ruston, La. The Lady Techsters however still hold a commanding 24-5 series record over UH. The Rainbow Wahine are 7-8 in WAC Tournament openers.
 
The Rainbow Wahine had a trio of players recognized for their stellar play that led UH to its best conference record since 2007-08. If the 'Bows are to able to make a run in their final WAC tournament, they will need solid play from sophomore forward Kamilah Jackson who became the first Rainbow Wahine since 2007-08 to earn all-WAC second team honors. She is just the 12th individual Rainbow Wahine to ever earn all-WAC honors. For the second straight season, Jackson averaged a double-double in WAC action this year with 11.5 points and a league-high 10.6 rebounds a game. Although only a sophomore, Jackson has already started to ascend the UH career rebounding charts. Currently she is No. 7 with 627 total rebounds No. 2 in rebounding average at 11.2 and No. 3 in offensive rebounds (238). She is now also holding steady at No. 6 in scoring average (12.6 points per game). In the latest NCAA rankings, Jackson was No. 11 in the nation with 15 double-doubles and No. 16  with 10.5 rebounds per game overall. 
 
Senior guard Breanna Arbuckle was selected to the all-WAC defensive team after leading UH with 44 blocks overall with 21 of those coming in conference action. Arbuckle also was tied with a team-high 16 steals in WAC games. In her four year career, the senior guard has cemented herself as one of the better athletes to ever don the green and white. She is No. 3 in the UH career record books with 144 blocked shots, No. 8 in UH history with 612 total rebounds, No. 9 in offensive rebounds (186) and No. 5 in defensive rebounds (426). This season overall she averaged a career-high 10.1 points with 6.4 boards per game and she had a career-high .638 free-throw percentage sinking 90-of-141 shots from the charity stripe.
 
Alissa Campanero is the fourth UH player to ever earn All-Freshman team honors. The UH point-guard, averaged 7.9 points and 2.9 assists per game in her rookie season. In WAC action, she drained a team-high 22 3-pointers, was 30-of-33 for a team-high .909 free-throw percentage; dished out a team-high 41 assists; and was second in the WAC averaging 35.6 minutes per game. Campanero also was tied for the team-high with 16 steals. Overall she is tied with Crystal Lee's single season mark at No. 5 of 46 3-pointers made and is No. 2 in single season 3-point field goal attempts with 155.
 
This will be UH's 16th and final WAC Tournament before joining the Big West Conference next season. The Rainbow Wahine are 7-8 in WAC Tournament openers and 1-8 in their last nine appearances with the only opening win coming in the 2006 tournament.

Series Information: Louisiana Tech leads, 24-5, but UH has won the last two meetings this season.
