HONOLULU—The No. 53 University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (9-7) held off a charging UC Davis squad for a 4-3 victory at the UH Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Rainbow Wahine started strong, sweeping the doubles matches, 3-0 to capture the match's first point. UH's No. 1 pair of
Barbara Pinterova and
Jamie Pawid handled UC Davis' Megan Heneghan and Kelly Chui, 8-2. The No. 3 duo of
Aglae Van den Bergh and
Martina Kostalova then defeated Dahra Zamudio and Nicole Koehly, 8-3. In the final and closest doubles match of the day, UH's
Katarina Poljakova and
Xenia Suworowa won the final two games to close out the doubles action with a 9-7 win over Layla Sanders and Ellie Edles.
In singles, however, the Aggies battled back. Edles started their rally by defeating Van den Bergh, 6-2, 6-2. UH then went back in front with Pawid defeating Chui soundly, 6-2, 6-0. UCD though won the next two matches with Heneghan besting Pinterova, 6-4, 6-1 and Layla Sanders holding off Suworowa, 6-4, 6-2. Hawai'i's Poljakova then evened the match at 3-to-3 with a hard fought 7-5 (5), 6-4 win over Zamudio. Kostalova then battled back to seal the win for the 'Bows in the longest match of the day, defeating Lauren Curry 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude their 11-match homestand with their final home matches of the year against two conference opponents in Utah State (Friday, April 6) and San Jose State (Sunday, April 8).
