HONOLULU – The No. 58 University of Hawai`i (7-6) women's tennis team defeated Illinois State, 6-1, on Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine almost swept all the matches, but lost in a tiebreaker in the final match of the day.
In doubles play, the second pairing of
Katarina Poljakova and
Xenia Suworowa won the first match against Emmie Marx and Ariane Maack, 8-2. No. 3
Aglae Van den Bergh and
Martina Kostalova coasted by Hannah Esker and Stefanie Youngberg, 8-0. The final match to finish was the top duo of
Jamie Pawid and
Barbara Pinterova, in which UH defeated Aniko Kiss and Phyllis Tigges in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3), to sweep the doubles action.
In singles, Kostalova defeated Carolina Abello, 6-1, 6-2 and Suworowa was able to clinch her match against Hannah Esker, 7-5, 6-1.
Jamie Pawid improved her record by beating Phyllis Tigges, 6-1, 7-5.
Barbara Pinterova defended her No. 1 court position with a solid win over Aniko Kiss, 7-5, 6-0. In the final match of the day,
Aglae Van den Bergh fell in battle against Illinois State's Gabby Phillips, 5-7, 6-7 (7-5).
