No. 52 Women's Tennis Plays Four Matches This Week

HONOLULU – The No. 52 University of Hawai'i (5-5) women's tennis team continues to stay home with four matches this week against Montana State (3-3), No. 21 Notre Dame (9-4), Illinois State (5-5), and No. 68 Wyoming (7-4) at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine suffered a disppointing defeat against No. 21 Texas Tech last week. The Red Raiders brought in one ranked doubles pair and one ranked singles player. Barbara Pinterova played in the No. 1 match defeating No. 122 Elizabeth Ullathorne. Pinterova has moved to the No. 1 position in the last three matches and has shown the ability to win games against tough competitors, going on a two-match win-streak. Moving to the No. 2 position has re-energized Katarina Poljakova to go 3-2 in her last five matches. Jamie Pawid has moved to the No. 3 position and succeeding, going 5-3. The 'Bows are playing a rescheduled match from last week against MSU due to inclement weather conditions on March 9.

Montana State is on a two-game winning streak, sweeping both Portland State and Montana State-Billings at home. Ellie Crum and Andrea De La Torre share the Bobcats in wins at 4-2. The best doubles pairing for MSU has been Gabi Villegas and Andrea De La Torre who are 3-1. They are 2-0 in the No. 2 slot and 1-1 at No. 3 slot.

The Irish come into Hawai'i undefeated with an all-time record of 3-0 against the 'Bows with the last match being played in 2008. This year, they bring in three ranked singles players: No. 52 Shannon Mathews, No. 73 Kristy Frilling, and No. 102 Britney Sanders. Britney Sanders has the best overall singles record with 11-2, playing mostly in the No. 4 court. They also bring the nationally ranked No. 2 duo of Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews with a record of 9-3.

Illinois State is 2-1 against the 'Bows all-time with winning the last two matches in 1999 and 2003; the away team has won every match thus far. The Red Birds are 2-5 away from home this season.

The Cowgirls are on a three game win-streak coming into Hawai'i. Wyoming brings a ranked duo of No. 60 Simona Synkova and Veronica Popvici with a record of 5-4 in the No. 1 court. In singles, Jessica Parizher is 8-2 playing mostly in the No. 5 court (5-1), but has seen time on the No. 4 court (0-1) and the No. 6 court (3-0).
