Los Angeles, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team could not gain any traction against No. 4 UCLA, falling 7-0 on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins improved to 12-2 while the Rainbow Warriors slipped to 1-6.
The Bruins fielded the nationally ranked pair of Nick Meister and Adrien Puget (No. 52) and defeated the 'Bows top duo of
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Dmytro Kovalyov, 8-3, in the last doubles match of the day.
In two doubles, the UH pair of
Carter Lam and
Charlie Rice were downed by Alex Brigham and Marcos Giron, 8-4, to secure the doubles point for UCLA.
In singles action, UCLA had three nationally ranked players—No. 33 Meister, No. 81 Clay Thompson, and No. 109 Puget—played in the first three positions. Maxime Tabatruong started off singles play and defeated Nils Schumann in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Brooklyn was moved to the No. 2 position for the first time as he gave a fight but fell short to Meister, 6-3, 6-2.
Chas Okamoto was put into the first singles position for the first time this season but lost to Clay Thompson, 6-2, 6-1, which secured the victory for the Bruins.
The 'Bows next face Nevada in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Monday, Mar. 12 at 1:30 p.m. PT in UH's first Western Athletic Conference match.
