IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (3-2) knocked off No. 56 UC Irvine, 4-3 for their second road win in a row.  The 'Bows were unable to win the doubles point, but bounced back to take four singles matches to secure the victory at the Anteater Tennis Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
 
In doubles action, the Rainbow Wahine were tied 1-1 heading into the final match that pitted UH's Barbara Pinterova and Xenia Suworowa against UCI's Franziska Goettsching and Kristina Smith.  The UH duo jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but could not hold on.  Instead, Goettsching and Smith were able to mount a comeback victory that went into a tie-breaker to decide the match and receive the point.  The Anteaters were able to complete the comeback in a see-saw battle to win the point and the match, 9-8 (10-8).
 
The Rainbow Wahine were able to turn it around in singles action. Jamie Pawid started UH off with a straight-set win over Goettsching, 6-2, 7-5.  Pinterova followed with a victory over Courtney Byron, 6-2, 6-3, but Aglae Van Den Bergh fell in three sets to Ali Facey, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.  The score was tied at 2-to-2 because of the doubles point, when Hawai'i's Katarina Poljakova came through with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kristina Smith to give UH the slight edge at 3-2.  With only two matches left and UH only needing one point to secure the victory, Martina Kostalova was able to storm back after losing the first set 4-6 to defeat Marivick Mamiit, 6-2, 6-4 to seal the win. Suworowa's match against Kat Facey also went to a third set, but Facey came out the victor, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
 
The Rainbow Wahine head to Fresno, Calif. to play in their first Western Athletic Conference match of the season against the Fresno State Bulldogs (1-3). First serve at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center  is at 12:00 p.m.  Hawai'i will finish their California road trip against No. 54 San Diego State on Monday, Feb. 13.
