MORAGA, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team ends their three-game losing streak Sunday by defeating No.61 Saint Mary's College (CA), 4-3. The Rainbow Warriors rallied in both doubles and singles play to win their first of three road matches this week.
After losing in one doubles, UH (1-3) won the next two matches with
Carter Lam and
Jared Spiker winning at the two, 9-8, and
Chas Okamoto and
Chris Meyer posting an 8-6 win in three doubles. Okamoto and Meyer's win played a pivotal role in the victory, capturing the doubles point for the 'Bows.
In singles action, Spiker won in straight sets at six doubles 6-1, 6-0, but SMC's Maxime Olivan topped
Jonathan Brooklyn, 6-1, 6-2, to keep his team in the match. SMC evened the match when Sherif Hamdy defeated Dymtro Kovalyov, 6-3, 6-4, at the two but Okamoto responded for the 'Bows with a three-set victory in three singles.
The deciding point came at four singles when Gavin Leon (SMC) was forced to retire to
Nils Schuhmann. Leon won the first set in a tiebreaker but trailed Schuhmann 4-3 in set two.
UH continues on the road to face off against Pac-12 powerhouse No. 6 Stanford Cardinal in Stanford, Calif. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 1:30 p.m. PT.
