HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (8-13, 3-3 WAC) fell to Idaho (6-16, 1-5 WAC), 69-61 on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. It was a tale of two halves, as UH played strong in the first half, but in the second half it was the Vandals who came out on top.
For Hawai`i three players scored in double digits, led by
Kamilah Jackson, who notched her 12th double-double of the season with 15 points and a season-high 20 rebounds.
Alissa Campanero and
Kanisha Bello both scored 11 points for the 'Bows. Campanero hit three 3-pointers, sank 2-of-2 free throws, and dished out a team-high five assists. Bello scored all 11 points in the first half off the bench. She was 5-for-11 from the floor with one trey.
The Rainbow Wahine led Idaho at the end of the first half, 37-26. Bello led all scorers with 11 points. Jackson was second with seven points and already had 12 rebounds in the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half, UH started out fine, building their lead to 18 points, 46-28 at the 17:20 mark. But then Idaho started their comeback and went on a 19-5 run while their defense allowed just one UH field goal in the next 10 minutes. Idaho out-scored the 'Bows 43-24 in the second half alone. The Vandals shredded the UH defense at times and out-scored UH, 32-to-18 in the paint. But on the positive side, Hawai`i had 25 second-chance points to Idaho's six and UH's bench was able to out-duel UI's reserves, 16-to-14. Another positive was that UH committed a season-low nine turnovers and the 'Bows out-rebounded their opponents 58-to-40. But after shooting 34% from the floor in the first half, the 'Bows managed just 18.9% in the second half.
For Idaho it was their first win in the WAC this season and it snapped their eight-game losing streak. The Vandals were led by Keri Arendse who scored a game-high 19 points while Ganeaya Rogers and Alyssa Charlston both added 14 a piece. Arendse also led UI with 10 rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 against Utah State at 7:00 p.m. It is “Play for Kay” and Pink Zone night for breast cancer awareness. Before UH's game, the annual Alumnae Game will take place with almost 40 former Rainbow Wahine taking the court again. The Alumnae Game will start at 5:00 p.m.
