Zack Swasey's three-RBI double sparked a seven-run fifth inning to give Hawai'i a 9-2 series opening win over Wagner College. The Rainbows improve to 2-3 on the season while Wagner drops their season opener.
Matt Sisto (2-0) allowed no earned runs while scattering seven hits over eight complete innings with six strikeouts. Both Seahawk runs were unearned.
Stephen Ventimilia led the 'Bows with three hits, one run, and a two-RBI triple. Pi'ikea Kitamura and
Collin Bennett both posted two hits and one run, with Bennett adding one RBI.
Seahawk starter Max Schmardel (0-1) was tagged with the loss in four innings of work, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five Rainbows. Hayden Hunter and Ian Miller each had two hits to lead Wagner.
After UH scored one run each in the first and second inning, Wagner struck back with a pair of runs to even the game. The Seahawks capitalized on a pair of Rainbow throwing errors in the fifth inning to make a game of it.
The rally was short-lived, as UH put up seven runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Swasey hit his base clearing double, and Ventimilia's triple gave the 'Bows a 9-2 lead.
There were 2,423 tickets issued for tonight's contest, and a turnstile count of 1,012.
UH and Wagner continue their series on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
