HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team was defeated Sunday by No. 27 Oregon, 14-5. The Ducks used an eight-run fourth inning to win going away. The series concludes Monday at 1:05 p.m.
Conner George led the Rainbows (1-2) in his first start of the season. The first baseman batted 2-4 with two runs scored.
Joe Goldenberg recorded one hit and two RBI, and
Trevor Podratz added one hit and two runs scored.
For Oregon, A.J. Altobelli batted 3-6 with one run and two RBI, and Aaron Jones recorded three hits, two runs, and two RBI. Kyle Garlick batted 2-4 with three runs and two RBI including a two-run homerun in UO's big fourth inning.
On the mound, Brando Tessar (1-0) picked up the win for Oregon, tossing 6.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Jon Flinn (0-1) was tagged with the loss in a difficult first outing as a Rainbow. He allowed five earned runs in 3.1 innings.
Kyle Dowdy allowed just one run on one hit in 2.2 innings of relief for UH.
Oregon jumped on the board early, using Altobelli's leadoff double to plate two runs and grab a 2-0 lead after half an inning. Flinn appeared to settle down from that point, pitching scoreless ball until Oregon's fourth-inning explosion.
The 'Bows finally got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. A
Stephen Ventimilia grounder to first allowed Podratz to score, and George later scampered home on a wild pitch by Tessar.
There were 3,710 tickets issued and a turnstile count of 2,521.
