FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team (3-3) fell to Fresno State (2-3), 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in their first Western Athletic Conference match of the season.

In doubles action, the Rainbow Wahine gave a valiant effort against the Bulldogs, but could not secure the point.  The first match between the No. 10 pairing of Katarina Poljakova and Jamie Pawid were defeated by Marianne Jodoin and Tanya Murtagh, 8-5 and the combo of Bianca Modoc and Laura Pola also held off UH's Aglae Van den Berg and Martina Kostalova, 8-5 to capture the doubles point. Hawai'i's Barbara Pinterova and Xenia Suworowa defeated Olga Kirpicheva and Aishwarya Agrawal, 8-4.

Singles play started off strong with UH winning the first two matches. Pawid overwhelmed Pola, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 and then Martina Kostalova had a strong victory over Melissa McQueen, 6-1, 6-0. After losing the next two matches, the match was on the line with two players left on the court. Both of the final matches went to the limit with Poljakova giving a valiant effort in defeat to Kirpicheva, 6-3, 2-6, 4-6, and Aglae Van den Bergh falling to Tanya Murtagh after taking a close first set, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The loss snapped UH's two-game road win streak in which they defeated Loyola Marymount and No. 56 UC Irvine. 
The Rainbow Wahine  now head to southern California to battle No. 54 San Diego State in San Diego, Calif. on Monday, Feb. 13 at 2:00 p.m. PT, to finish off the four game road trip.
