Men’s Golf Tied For 17th At Ameri Ari Invite

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is tied for 17th place after the first round of the 22nd Ameri Ari Invitational at Waikiki Beach Resort, Wednesday at the Waikoloa King's Course.
 
The 20-team field includes eight nationally ranked teams, including six teams ranked in the top eight. Top-ranked Texas leads the tournament with an 18-under par 270, five strokes ahead of No. 4 UCLA and No. 5 Washington. Second-ranked Oregon is in seventh place at 284.
 
The Warriors, who are serving as co-hosts of the tournament along with UH-Hilo, shot a 5-over 293 and is tied with Western Athletic Conference rival San Jose State.
 
Leading the UH contingent is senior T.J. Kua, who shot 2-under 70 and is in a 14-way tie for 26th place. After finishing in a tie for 14th place at last year's Ameri Ari Invitational, the Lihu'e, Kaua'i native has now posted four consecutive rounds under par at the Waikoloa King's Course.
 
Sophomore Nainoa Calip shot 1-over 73 while junior Cory Oride is one stroke back at 2-over 74. Junior Alex Chu and freshman Brian Lee, each shot 4-over 76.
 
Stanford's Patrick Grimes, Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan, and UCLA's Pontus Widegren are tied for the day one lead at 6-under 66, one stroke ahead of a seven-way tie for second, which includes three Texas golfers.
 
The tournament continues on Thursday with Round 2.
