HO'OLEHUA, Moloka'i – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team and Chaminade treated basketball fans on the “Friendly Isle” to an entertaining contest with UH ultimately pulling away for a 104-93 win before a packed house Saturday night at “The Barn,” the home gym of Molokai High School.
It was a torrid pace throughout for both teams as UH (5-3) finished with its highest point total in more than 18 years. UH last scored 104 points in a double-overtime win over UTEP in 1994.
The Rainbow Warriors, who scored just 56 points in its last game versus Pepperdine, eclipsed that total in the first half alone taking a 63-49 lead at the break. That first-half total was just three points off a school record of 66 set in 1972.
The teams combined for 27 three pointers with UH's front court dominance proving the difference. UH shot 60 percent from the floor and out-scored the Silverswords, 48-20, in the paint. The 'Bows also held a 45-24 advantage on the glass.
Each team had six players score in double figures.
Christian Standhardinger finished with his third straight double-double, leading UH with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Isaac Fotu set a new season high with 18 points, a number equaled by
Brandon Spearman.
Hauns Brereton (12),
Vander Joaquim (11) and
Brandon Jawato (10) also scored in double figures.
D'Andre Haskins and Benni Murray each dropped 21 points for the Silverswords.
The team's combined for 19 three-pointers in the first half. Chaminade (3-7), which upset Texas earlier this year, nailed 11 of those, yet still trailed by double-digits at the break. UH came out strong in the second half and built its lead to as many as 20 points. Chaminade, however, wouldn't back down and rallied to within five points, 84-79, with six minutes remaining. But the 'Bows shut the door on the Silverswords with a decisive 11-2 run.
UH now returns to Honolulu where it will a week to prepare for the fourth annual Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, Dec. 22, 23 and 25. The 'Bows will face Miami in a first round match-up on Saturday, Dec. 22 with a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Stan Sheriff Center.
