HONOLULU – On Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center, the No. 9 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept Cal Poly 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 to win the Big West Conference title outright and earn the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
Emily Hartong hit a season-high .619 for the 'Bows who improved 21-2 overall and 14-0 in the Big West.
Jane Croson posted 13 kills and Hartong added a match-high 14 kills along with four block assists. Holly Franks led Cal Poly (3-21, 2-10 BWC) with eight kills and Steffi Scooter had a match-best 10 digs.
Every Rainbow got in on the action, as
Kristiana Tuaniga equaled Hartong with a match-high four blocks and
Ashley Kastl came off the bench to post three kills. Kalei Adolpho buried four kills and
Mita Uiato had a team-high seven digs.
Set one saw the 'Bows struggle early but pick up the pace and take a 9-7 lead. Hartong had a pair of blocks to highlight a dominant net presence as UH cruised to the opening set win.
Hartong and Croson caught fire in the second set. Hartong buried seven kills in the set including four straight midway through, while Croson added five kills of her own. The Mustangs hung around though, and evened the score at 16-16 with three straight points. After a Hawai'i timeout, a
Jade Vorster kill and a Croson block regained the lead for UH and the 'Bows cruised to the two-set lead. UH built a big lead in the third set and staved off a late rally to complete the sweep.
Hawai'i next plays a non-conference tilt against BYU-Hawai'i on Thursday, Nov. 8. First serve at the Stan Sheriff Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
