Match Notes
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team will begin its quest for a fifth national title when it travels to Seattle, Wash. to play Santa Clara at Alaska Airlines Arena in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 30. Match time is set for 5:00 p.m. PT (3:00 p.m. HT).
Host and 13
th-seeded Washington will play Central Arkansas in the second match of the day. The winners will face off Saturday, Dec. 1 for a spot in the Omaha Regional.
The 'Bows are 9-0 all-time against the Broncos (20-11) who are an at-large selection from the West Coast Conference. The two teams have never met in the postseason and most recently played in the 2009 Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational which ended in a four-set win for Hawai'i. The Broncos finished fourth in the West Coast Conference this year with a 9-7 record, and will be playing in their 14
th NCAA Tournament.
UH will play its opening round match in Seattle for the second time in three seasons. In 2010, the 'Bows topped Portland State before suffering a second round sweep to the host Huskies. Last season they hosted and won rounds one and two at the Stan Sheriff Center before falling to Southern California in the Honolulu Regional.
UH versus Washington and Central Arkansas
The 'Bows are 8-4 overall against Washington and 2-1 in the postseason. Prior to their meeting two seasons ago, UH swept the Huskies in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament in Honolulu. The two teams also squared off in the 1979 AIAW National Tournament with the 'Bows winning en route to their first national title. Hawai'i and Central Arkansas have never played each other.
