HONOLULU--The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team returned home to host the 2012 Rainbow Wahine Invitational with Hawai`i Pacific and UC Irvine participating in the three-team tournament. All three teams were in action on Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.
UH's top doubles team of
Katarina Poljakova and
Martina Kostalova was the only Hawai`i pair to win their match. Poljakova and Kostalova combined to defeat UCI's Kristina Smith and Franziska Goettshing, 8-6.
In singles, the Rainbow Wahine captured three matches with Poljakova holding off Marivick Mammitt of UC Irvine, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Kelsey Daguio battled hard to earn the win, taking the first set, 6-4 but falling in the second, 3-6. But Daguio bounced back to take the deciding set, 6-2 for the win. UH's third win came off a default to
Rebecca Faltusz. After she dropped the first set, in a tie-breaker, HPU's Magdalena Smejova retired.
Xenia Suworowa fell in a close match to Sarah Gong of UCI, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 while
Daisy Green also fell in three sets to Lea Kruse-Utermann of HPU, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The tournament continues on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
