SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team finished a fruitful road trip with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-21 win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night at the Thunderdome. UH improved to a perfect 7-0 in the Big West Conference and 14-2 overall, while the Gauchos dropped to 2-3 in the Big West and 9-11 overall.
Emily Hartong buried a match-high 16 kills with 11 digs and led a Hawai'i attack that had just six errors and hit .315 for the match.
Ashley Kastl and Kalei Adolpho both had six kills with Kastl adding nine digs and Adolpho recording a match-high seven blocks.
Leah Sully led UCSB with 10 kills and 10 digs.
The 'Bows grabbed an early set one lead and never looked back. Hartong opened the match with a pair of kills but UCSB managed to remain in striking distance. Kills by Jenna Wilson (4 kills) and Sully cut the lead to 12-8 but the set belonged the UH from that point on. Hawai'i ran off six straight points led by three kills and a block assist by Hartong. Hartong was fantastic in the set, burying seven kills and hitting .500.
UH was relentless in taking the second set 25-16, as Adolpho came alive in the middle. She buried four kills and posted three block assists in the set as Hawai'i seized control of the match. With the score knotted at 12-12, UH began its run highlighted by a pair of
Jade Vorster (5 kills, 4 blocks) kills and block assists by Kastl and Adolpho. The 'Bows led 20-14 at that point and cruised to the win.
In what may have been a letdown for the 'Bows in previous matches, they kept the momentum going to rout the Gauchos in the third set and complete the sweep. UCSB made a late run in the final set but it wasn't enough, as Hawai'i recorded its fourth sweep of the conference season and third in the last four matches.
The 'Bows return home and will retake the court on Friday, Oct. 12 against Cal State Northridge. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
