HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team kicked off its season with the first day of the UH Anuenue Invitational Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.
 
The Rainbow Wahine welcomed local schools BYU-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific with both singles and doubles competition. Five UH players took to the courts, but left disappointed after being swept in doubles and in singles competition.
 
UH fell behind early in doubles after losing to HPU twice and BYU-H once. The top pair of Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Suworowa was defeated by Vivian Hanson and Magdalena Smejova of HPU, 8-4. Marietta Tuionetoa and Marika Kobayashi of BYU-H downed Martina Kostalova and Rebecca Faltusz, 8-4. In the third and final match of the day in doubles, Faltusz was used again to partner with Kelsey Daguio, but were stopped by Ielyzaveta Rybakova and Celina Goetti of HPU, 8-2.
 
In singles, top player Poljakova won the first set to Karen Ramirez-Rivera of HPU, 6-2. Ramirez-Rivera came back with a 6-3 second set winner and was able to edge out Pojakova in the close final set, 7-5. Suworowa had almost the same story when she faced-off against Goetti. Suworowa won the first set 6-4, but lost the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Daguio dropped the first to Rybakova 6-2, but came out with a solid win in the second set, 6-3. In the final set, Daguio could not hang on to the momentum and lost 7-5.
 
The three day tournament continues Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
