The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2012 spring season with a 4-3 dual match win over Penn State on Thursday afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine went 1-2 in three close doubles matches to start the day, then pulled out the victory by winning four-of-six singles matches, edging out the Nittany Lions at the UH Tennis Complex.
 
In doubles, both teams battled hard, but Penn State took the first point of the day by winning two-of-the-three matches. UH's number one pair, Katarina Poljakova/Jamie Pawid fell to the Nittany Lions duo of Petra Januskova/Nina Sertic, 8-6. In the No. 2 match, the combo of Barbara Pinterova and Martina Kostalova defeated Fernanda Perrotta and Marie-Frederique Bedard, 8-6, while in the third and final doubles match, UH's Xenia Suworowa and Aglae Van den Bergh fell to Carmen Sandor/Chelsea Utting in the tightest match of the morning, 9-8 with an 8-6 tie-breaker win for the Nittany Lions.
 
Hawai'i and Penn State then squared off in singles. The No. 2 match finished first with Pawid defeating Sandor, 6-0, 6-1. PSU's Januskova—who is ranked No. 96 in the preseason ITA singles rankings—then defeated Poljakova in the No. 1 battle, 6-3, 6-0. UH then took the next two matches in straight sets with Suworowa defeating Sertic, (6-3, 6-1) and Pinterova defeating Bedard (7-5, 6-1) to give the 'Bows a slight 3-2 lead. But Penn State's Utting swept UH's Kostalova (6-0, 6-4) to even the score at 3-3 with just one match to go between Hawai'i's Kelsey Daguio and the Nittany Lions' Perrotta. With the match tied at a set a piece (6-2, 3-6) and both teams cheering on their teammates, Perrotta took an early 3-2 lead in the third set. But Daguio fought back, tying it at 3-3, then breaking Perrotta to go up 4-3. Daguio followed by winning her own serve to up 5-3 before Perrotta won her serve to inch closer to 5-4.  Daguio then came throughin the clutch to win the final game to defeat Perrotta, 6-4 in the final set to seal UH's first win of the season.
 
Next up for Hawai'i is No. 6 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 11:00 am at the UH Tennis Complex.
