HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team was defeated Sunday by UC Santa Barbara, 4-3. This was the final day of their three-match stretch as they fell to 0-3 on the season. The Gauchos improved to 2-1.
Hawai'i won the doubles point on the heels of a close win at the three. The UH pair of
Danilo Casanova and
Chris Meyer defeated Benjamin Recknagel and Ziad Sultan in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (5).
Charlie Rice and
Carter Lam grabbed the other doubles win with an 8-2 victory over Greg Scott and Axel Bouillin.
The Gauchos responded with four wins in singles play to edge the 'Bows. UH earned two wins but UCSB won the rest to capture the match. Rice defeated Mbonisi Ndimande 6-4, 7-5, at the four, and
Jared Spiker earned a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8) super tie-breaker win at six singles.
The 'Bows will have over two weeks off before they travel to California for a trio of matches. First up will be St. Mary's on Feb. 5 at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
