HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team defeated Rice University Thursday at the Verizon Volleyball Challenge. UH won in straight sets, 25-10, 25-18, 25-19, to improve to 6-1. Rice fell to 3-3.
Jane Croson led the 'Bows with 16 kills for a .727 hitting percentage. Kanani Danielson posted 10 kills and Mita Uiato had a match-high 12 digs.
Jillian Humphrey and Jordan Meredith each had five kills to lead Rice.
The Owls were no match for Hawai'i. In set one, UH cruised to its most lopsided win in any set this season. The 'Bows never trailed, closing with 12 straight points highlighted by four blocks from Brittany Hewitt. Hewitt added nine kills for a match-high .818 hitting percentage.
Hawai'i was again the better side in the second set. The 'Bows led 10-9 before winning seven of the next nine points to take a commanding 17-11 lead. UH closed out the set for a 2-0 lead then sealed the win with a 25-19 win in set three.
In the opening match of the evening, Cincinnati defeated Pacific in three sets, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22.
There were 5,313 tickets sold for the contest, and a turnstile count of 3,389.
The 'Bows continue the tournament Friday when they face Pacific at 7:00 p.m. That match will be preceded by Rice versus Cincinnati at 5:00 p.m.
