No. 10 Hawai‘i Falls To No. 12 UCLA In Wahine Classic

HONOLULU – In the championship match of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, the No. 10 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team was defeated by No. 12 UCLA in four sets, 25-20, 28-26, 20-25, 25-17. UH drops its first match of the season to fall to 5-1 while UCLA improves to 6-0. 

Kanani Danielson recorded 17 kills and 19 digs, both team-highs, with Emily Hartong posting 16 kills and Brittany Hewitt adding 10 kills and five blocks. 

Tabi Love led the Bruins with 18 kills and Lainey Gera recorded 23 digs. 

UCLA opened the match with a 25-2o first-set win. The Bruins led by one midway through then pulled away with five straight points to take an 18-12 advantage. The 'Bows rallied to cut the lead to 21-18, but a Kelly Reeves (4 K, 13 D) kill gave UCLA the early lead in the match. 

The Bruins also won what turned out to be a thrilling second set. With the score knotted at 14-14, UCLA went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. The 'Bows would make a run of their own and tie the score at 20-20. The teams traded points as Jane Croson's kill put Hawai'i ahead 26-25. UH could not close out the win though, as the Bruins scored three straight points for a 27-25 win. Croson posted 10 kills and 12 digs on the night. 

Hawai'i rebounded for a 25-20 set three win. UCLA held the advantage early, as a Kidder kill and block gave the Bruins a 9-5 lead, but UH responded with an 8-1 run to grab a 13-10 lead and control of the set. Hawai'i maintained the lead down the stretch and a pair of kills by Danielson sealed the win. 

UCLA closed out the match with a 25-17 win in set four. The Bruins went on a 10-2 run midway through the set and paced to the victory. 

After the match, Kanani Danielson, Emily Hartong, and Jane Croson were named to the all-tournament team. UCLA outside hitter Rachel Kidder was named Most Outstanding Player. 

There were 8,525 tickets issued for the match, the most since 2006, and a turnstile count of 7,339. 

Hawai'i next hosts the Verizon Volleyball Challenge from September 8-10. First up will be Rice University on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
