Hawai‘i Tops Pepperdine For Second Straight Night

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team defeated Pepperdine Saturday in four sets (21-25, 25-9, 25-14, 25-14 ). UH improves to 10-1 while the Waves drop to 6-5.
 
Jane Croson posted a match and career-high 23 kills to go along with 15 digs. Kanani Danielson had 16 kills and 10 digs, moving her closer to recording 1,000 digs for her career, and Mita Uiato added 13 digs and 50 assists.
 
Lilla Frederick led Pepperdine with 10 kills and 15 digs.
 
Despite the dominating win, the 'Bows were handed just their second first-set defeat of the season as Pepperdine opened the match with a 25-21 win. UH grabbed an early 6-2 lead on the heels of kills by Croson and Danielson, but later in the set, kills by Kim Hill (8 K, 8 D) and Samantha Cash (9 K) helped Pepperdine grab the lead and the win.
 
UH came to life with a 25-9 win in set two, opening an early 7-1 advantage and never looking back. The 'Bows ran off five straight points on three different occasions to coast to the win and even the match. Croson recorded the set-winning kill off an Uiato assist.
 
Hawai'i carried that momentum into the final two sets, winning both by 25-14 scores. The 'Bows raced out to an 8-1 lead in set three led by a pair of kills from Emily Hartong. Hartong posted nine kills and a career-high seven blocks. UH closed the set with five straight points to take the lead in the match. In the final set, UH broke a 4-4 tie with nine consecutive points to pace to the win.
 
There were 9,692 tickets sold for the contest, and a turnstile count of 8,556.
 
Hawai'i takes to the road for the first time this season as they open WAC play at Idaho and Utah State. UH will play the Vandals on Thursday, Sept. 22 and visit the Aggies Saturday, Sept. 24.
