No. 12 Hawai‘i Sweeps Cincinnati To Win Verizon Challenge

HONOLULU – In the championship match of the Verizon Volleyball Challenge, the No. 12 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept Cincinnati, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21. UH improves to 8-1 while the Bearcats drop to 7-4. 

Kanani Danielson posted a match-high 17 kills to go along with 10 digs. Jane Croson recorded nine kills and 10 digs and Mita Uiato added a match-high 42 assists. 

Missy Harpenau led Cincinnati with nine kills and Emily MacIntyre added 11 digs. 

UH opened up an early lead in set one and never looked back. The 'Bows led 10-3 before coasting to the seven point win. Danielson posted six kills and five digs in the set. 

In set two, Hawai'i raced out to a 6-1 lead only to see the Bearcats erase the deficit and tie the score at 12-12. The 'Bows again began to pull away, as a Danielson kill capped a 6-2 UH run. Cincinnati responded to take a one-point lead but Hawai'i eventually prevailed with a 25-23 win. 

Hawai'i led most of the way in set three, but the Bearcats remained in the hunt throughout the set. Brittany Hewitt (10 kills, 3 blks) recorded a kill to give her team a 15-11 lead, but Harpenau and Caylin Mahoney (1 kill, 7 digs) came right back with a pair of kills to cut the Rainbow lead to two points. With the set knotted at 21-21, Hewitt broke the tie with another kill to permanently give UH the lead.

Jane Croson and Brittany Hewitt earned all-tournament honors, and Kanani Danielson was named the Verizon Volleyball Challenge Most Outstanding Player

There were 6,393 tickets issued for the contest, and a turnstile count of 4,891.
 
UH retakes the court this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17, as they host Pepperdine. Both matches are set for 7:00 p.m.
