SEATTLE—The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team's rally attempt fell short in a 40-32 loss to Washington Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium. The Warriors dropped to 1-1 with its first loss of the year.
Washington stormed out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead, but UH roared back to cut the deficit to under a touchdown twice in the fourth quarter. However, UH couldn't get over the hump as the Huskies recovered UH's onside kick attempt late in the game to seal the win.
Washington quarterback Keith Price passed for 315 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the Huskies to their second win of the year. On the ground, Chris Polk added 107 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries.
UH's
Bryant Moniz finished 31-of-45 for 333 yards, while passing for one touchdown and rushing for another.
Royce Pollard hauled in eight passes for 128 yards and Jeremiah Ostrokwski caught 11 balls for 87 yards and one touchdown.
Washington ended with a 466-388 advantage in total offense.
UH was ultimately doomed by a slow start. Washington scored on each of their first three possessions, setting the tone with a 3-play 79-yard scoring drive to begin the game. It would be a sign of things to come as the Huskies racked up 281 yards in the first quarter alone to take a 21-0 lead.
Meanwhile, it was a case of missed opportunities for UH who lost a fumble at the Husky 5-yard line and saw another drive stall at the Husky 9-yard line. But the Warriors would finally awake from their slumber to score a pair of touchdowns to get back in the game.
UH got on the board midway through the second quarter. After the Warrior defense made its first stop of the day, the offense took over at their own 30-yard line and drove 70 yards, capped by
Sterling Jackson's 1-yard run. Jackson's first career touchdown cut the deficit to 21-7.
UW looked to regain a three-score lead when they were knocking on UH's door, but
Richard Torres picked off a Keith Price pass near the endzone and took it 99 yards for a touchdown, tied for the longest interception ever by a UH player.
However, UW regained momentum going into halftime scoring on a 31-yd Price touchdown pass with 44 seconds left to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room.
UH started the second half strong opening with a 14-play, seven-minute scoring drive, capped by a Moniz 1-yd plunge. After a Jackson 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter, UH trailed just 31-26.
A Price 31-yard pass to Seferian Jenkins at the 10-minuit mark made it 38-26. But UH was not packing it in yet as Moniz found Ostrowski for an 8-yard score with 1:39 left to make it 38-32. Washington blocked the ensuing extra point attempt and returned it to for two points for a 40-32 cushion. However, any remaining comeback hopes for UH were extinguished when the Huskies recovered the Warriors' onside kick attempt and ran out the clock.
The Warriors will now remain on the road for its second straight week, traveling to Las Vegas to face UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 HT).
