HONOLULU – At the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team defeated San Francisco, 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-23). It was the season opener for both teams, as UH improved to 1-0 while USF fell to 0-1. In the opening match of the tournament, Arizona defeated Wichita State, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20).

Kanani Danielson led UH with a match-high 13 kills to go along with eight digs and three blocks. Jane Croson posted 11 kills and eight digs in her Rainbow Wahine debut, and Emily Hartong added eight kills and three blocks.

Valentia Zaloznik and Jocelyn Levig both posted 11 kills to lead the Lady Dons.

Hawai'i jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in set one only to see the Dons make it interesting, but UH would eventually prevail for a 25-22 win. Brittany Hewitt (7 kills, 3 blocks) recorded the game-winning kill to give her team a 1-0 lead.

UH turned it on in set two with a resounding 25-12 win, going on a 9-2 run midway through the set to win going away. Completing the sweep proved to be a challenge though, as UH narrowly defeated the Dons in set three, 25-23. They trailed 8-6 early, but block assists by Hewitt and Mita Uiato (40 assists) helped even the set at 10-10. Hawai'i held a slim 20-19 lead late in the set and sealed the win on a pair of kills by Danielson and Hartong.

There were 6,252 tickets issued for the match, and a turnstile count of 5,101.

The tournament continues tomorrow with UH taking on Wichita State at 7:00 p.m. The match will be preceded by Arizona versus USF at 5:00 p.m.
