HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team (19-12, 8-8 WAC) hosts its second straight postseason game when it faces San Francisco (18-14, 10-4 WCC) of the West Coast Conference in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on Saturday, March 19. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
This will be the second straight WCC opponent for UH who defeated Portland, 76-64, in a first-round match-up on Tuesday. The Dons, meanwhile, advanced to the second round with an 81-73 home win over Idaho on Wednesday. The winner of the UH-USF game will move on to the tournament quarterfinals to face Santa Clara on Tuesday, March 22.
UH, in its first postseason since 2004, grabbed a CIT first-round win over Portland after a stellar defensive effort. The 'Bows held the Pilots to just 35 percent shooting, including just 31 percent from three-point range.
Zane Johnson, who tied the single-season three-point record (97) led UH with 19 points, while
Jeremiah Ostrowski added a career-high 17 points. Both
Bill Amis (14 pts, 11 reb) and
Vander Joaquim (11 pts, 10 reb) recorded double-doubles.
San Francisco started the season slowly before transforming into a WCC contender. The Dons finished third in the league with a 10-4 mark, just behind St. Mary's and Gonzaga. USF and UH have met 13 times, most recently in the 2008-09 opener when the Dons defeated the 'Bows, 75-70, in Honolulu.
