KAHUKU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished in ninth place after shooting a 5-under 283 on the final day of the 35
th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Friday, at the Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course. UH's “B” team finished in 17
th place.
For the tournament, UH's “A” team shot 299-288-283 for a 870 total while the “B” team put together rounds of 314-312-302 for a 928 total. The ninth place finish for UH's “A” team was its best since placing sixth in 2000.
California won the team title by six shots over Texas A&M with a final round 277 for a 834 total. Virginia's Ben Kohles won a three-way playoff for the individual title over California's Max Homa and Texas A&M's John Hurley. Kohles sunk a six foot birdie putt on the second hole of the playoff.
Senior
Kamden Brakel, junior
T.J. Kua, and freshman
Nainoa Calip each shot 2-under 70 to lead the Warriors' “A” team. During an eight hole stretch, Brakel was 4-under while Kua strung together five birdies in his round and 12 for the tourney. Calip finished his final 36 holes in 5-under par.
Kua was UH's top individual finisher at 13th place with a 4-under 212 (73-69-70) while Calip tied for 23rd with a 1-under 215 (76-69-70). Brakel tied for 43rd at 5-over 221 (73-78-70).
For the second straight day,
Cory Oride shot another solid round with a 1-over 73. The junior was 3-under after eight holes before a costly triple bogey on 18, his ninth hole, dropped him to even par. Oride settled down during the final two rounds and posted a 234 total (89-72-73). Freshman
David Saka improved four strokes from his second round with a 6-over 78 and a 237 total (77-82-78).
Leading UH's “B” team was junior
Jared Sawada, who shot 2-under 70 and finished the tournament at 228 with rounds of 82, 76, and 70. Freshman
Tommy Yamashita shot a final round 78 for a 227 total (75-74-78). Sophomore
Henry Park finished the tourney with a 231 (76-80-75) after a 3-over 75 on Friday.
