KAHUKU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot an opening round 299 at the 35
th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Wednesday, at the Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course. UH's “B” team fired a 314.
For the Warriors' “A” squad, #T.J. Kua
and Kamden Brakel# shot 1-over 73, five shots off the lead set by Texas A&M's Conrad Shindler and California's Max Homa, who both shot 68. A&M's Jordan Russell and John Hurley were one shot back at 69 along with SMU's Kelly Kraft, Brigham-Young-Hawai'i's Aaron Puzey, and Nevada's Scott Smith.
Four of the five members of UH's “A” team made the turn at even par or 1-over. Freshmen
Nainoa Calip finished at 4-over 76 and
David Saka fired a 5-over 77.
Cory Oride settled with an 89 after a steady three-over on the back side.
Texas A&M and California, ranked No. 10 and No. 23, respectively, in the latest national rankings, posted 283 for the early lead. In addition to Shindler and Russell, A&M's Case Cochran also shot under par at 71. All five Golden Bears' shot even par or better including Michael Weaver, who shot 1-under 71.
Following A&M and Cal in the team standings are SMU (289), Nevada (290), and BYU-Hawai'i (292).
The tournament continues Thursday with the second round at the Palmer Course.
