Game Notes
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team plays its final non-conference game before heading into league play when it hosts nationally ranked UNLV in a New Year's Eve affair on Saturday, Dec. 31. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Runnin' Rebels (14-2) are ranked 19th in the latest Associated Press poll and are the second ranked team that UH will face in a week. The Rainbow Warriors (8-5) upset then-No. 14 Xavier, 84-82, in overtime in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Dec. 23.
After some early-season struggles, Hawai'i seems to be finally hitting its stride with wins in six of its last seven contests, including three straight. The 'Bows are coming off a 100-73 rout of South Carolina State on Thursday. It was the team's highest point total in nine years with the 'Bows exploding for 59 second-half points after trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half. Junior
Hauns Brereton poured in a career-high 22 points and led the second-half surge as he scored 10 of the team's first 12 points after the break.
UNLV also hit the century mark in its last game, romping Central Arkansas, 124-75, on Wednesday. The Runnin' Rebels have won five straight games and boast a win earlier this season over formerly top-ranked North Carolina on Nov. 26.
Following its showdown with UNLV, UH will begin its final season in the Western Athletic Conference with a home match-up against San Jose State on Saturday, Jan. 7.
