HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team will face its old rival Brigham Young in the regular season finale, Saturday, Dec. 3. Kick-off is 2:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN. With a win, UH (6-6) would become bowl eligible for the 11th time and secure a berth into the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Christmas Eve for the seventh time.

Following the game, 26 seniors will be honored during the traditional Senior Walk ceremony.

The Warriors are coming off a 35-23 victory over Tulane last Saturday which snapped a three-game losing streak. Quarterback David Graves started his first collegiate game and threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 57 yards and another score. He was replaced late in the third quarter by Shane Austin who completed 9-of-10 for 98 yards and led the Warriors to the game-clinching touchdown drive in the fourth quarter.

Since starting the season 1-2, BYU (8-3) has won seven of its last eight games. During that stretch, the Cougars have wins over Western Athletic Conference teams Utah State, San Jose State, Idaho, and New Mexico State.

The UH-BYU series dates back to 1930. The Cougars have dominated the series as of late, winning seven of the last eight games since 1993. However, the Warriors have memorable wins in 1989 and '90, scoring 50-plus points in consecutive routs and in 2001, in which UH set a school-record with 72 points over the previously unbeaten Cougars.

The following year, on the day BYU quarterback Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy, the Warriors won by 31 (59-28) over the then-No. 4 Cougars. Old Friends
The UH and BYU series dates back to 1930 when the then “Rainbows” defeated the Cougars, 49-13, in Honolulu Stadium. The teams met again in a home-and-home series in 1950 (UH won 39-7 in Honolulu) and '51 (BYU won 20-7 in Provo). In 1960, UH won 13-6 in Honolulu and again in 1974 (15-13) before the Cougars began a 10-game win streak in 1978. UH joined the WAC in 1979 while the Cougars left for the Mountain West Conference following the 1998 season. Hawai'i nearly defeated the Cougars in 1984, leading 13-12 late in the fourth quarter before rallying for an 18-13 victory at Aloha Stadium. BYU went on to win the national championship that season.

UH-BYU Rewind 2001
In the 2001 game, won by UH 72-45 at Aloha Stadium on Dec. 8, UH set a school scoring record. In addition, return specialist Chad Owens broke the NCAA record for most combined kickoff and punt returns in a game with 342 and NCAA record for most kickoff return yards in a game with 249. He also tied the NCAA record for most combined return touchdowns with 2 (1 kickoff and 1 punt). Quarterback Nick Rolovich, UH's current offensive coordinator, threw for 543 yards and a school-record eight touchdown passes. Wide receiver Ashley Lelie caught eight passes for 262 yards and two TDs. The teams combined for 117 points and 1,258 yards of total offense (UH-646, BYU-612) and 12 turnovers (UH-5, BYU 7). UH finished the season at 9-3 and were not invited to a bowl game. That snub helped trigger the creation of the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, which started in 2002 and assures UH a bowl berth with a winning record.
